The Maldives is not just a destination. It's a whole MOOD! Over 1,000 tiny coral islands lie scattered like jewels across the Indian Ocean, each one ringed by turquoise water and soft white sand. You lounge in your overwater villa. You sip a cocktail under the stars. Somewhere in between, doing nothing starts to feel like everything. Did you know the Maldives is the lowest-lying country on Earth? Its highest natural point is just 2.4 metres above sea level. So if you were hoping for a hike, forget it! But who needs hills when you've got infinity pools?
The Maldives is for anyone ready to master the art of "do not disturb". Fancy or laid-back, you set the tone. Honeymooners? This is your ultimate romantic fantasy. Dinner barefoot on a sandbank, a villa over the water, and nobody around but the two of you. Beach lovers? You'll feel like you've walked straight into a postcard. Pick a beach villa, step outside, and your toes are already in the sand, with the waves a few steps away. Need a break from life? With around 180 resorts, most on an island of their own, this is your personal slice of paradise. Expect infinity pools and a butler who somehow reads your mind. Ocean explorers? Snorkel among neon fish, swim beside manta rays in Baa Atoll, or meet whale sharks around South Ari Atoll. Wave chasers? Thulusdhoo and Himmafushi sit right next to some of the country's most famous surf breaks. Did you know most of the Maldives' 179 resorts have an entire island to themselves? It's like having a little world of your own.
From sunset cruises and private sandbank dinners to underwater restaurants and seaplane rides, the Maldives is full of moments you'll remember for years. Here are the experiences we'd suggest you plan your holiday around. 1. Sunset Cruise As the sun begins to dip, your boat glides out across water as smooth as glass. A gentle breeze plays with your hair, there's a cool drink in your hand, and the sky slowly turns pink, purple and gold. If you're lucky, a pod of dolphins might swim alongside, and for a while, the whole world seems to go quiet just for you. 2. Night Cruise After dark, the Maldives takes on a magic of its own. Soft music plays on deck, the sky fills with more stars than you knew it could hold, and on some nights, tiny plankton make the water beneath you glow blue. It feels straight out of a Yash Chopra film. That glowing water you've seen in Instagram reels? It's real. Voyaah Insider Tip: If glowing water is high on your list, we'd suggest planning your dates around a new moon, when the dark sky makes the glow stand out. Sightings are more common from about April to October, though nature never guarantees a show. 3. Private Sandbank Dinner Imagine a little strip of white sand in the middle of the Indian Ocean, with nobody on it except the two of you. Lanterns glow around your table, the waves lap just a few steps away, and dinner is served by candlelight as the sun sinks into the sea. For honeymooners and couples, there's nothing more romantic you can do in the Maldives, and your holiday manager can arrange the entire evening for you. If you'd like to surprise your partner, ask your holiday manager to turn the evening into a night on the sandbank. After dinner, a private bed is set up on the sand, so the two of you can fall asleep together under the Milky Way, with only the sea around you. In the morning, breakfast arrives right where you woke up. If you're travelling as a couple, here's why the Maldives is one of the favourite destinations for Indian couples. 4. Private Movie Screening Under the Stars Sink into a plush sofa on the beach with your partner beside you, as your favourite film plays on a big screen under the night sky. The waves keep a soft rhythm in the background, and dinner is served while the opening credits roll. Many resorts have outdoor cinemas on the beach, in the jungle or even over the water, and we'd suggest asking your holiday manager to arrange a private screening just for the two of you. 5. Underwater Dining Picture yourself at a table metres below the surface, wrapped in glass, as reef fish drift past and a ray glides overhead. Several Maldives resorts have restaurants about 5 to 9 metres under the sea, and Ithaa at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, which opened in 2005, was the world's first all-glass undersea restaurant. It's like dining in an aquarium, except this time, you're the one inside. Voyaah Insider Tip: Underwater restaurants seat only a handful of guests, and some have just one table. We'd suggest asking your holiday manager to reserve your slot when you book your holiday, rather than after you arrive.
6. Seaplane Ride Your holiday begins the moment you take off. As the seaplane climbs, the atolls appear below like turquoise rings scattered across a deep blue sea, and you'll find yourself pressing your face to the window like a child. Keep your phone ready, because this is a view you'll want to share with everyone back home. Voyaah Insider Tip: Seaplanes allow about 20 kg of checked baggage and 5 kg of hand baggage per person, which is often less than your international flight allows. Pack light, or be ready to pay for excess baggage. 7. Motorised Water Sports If you're feeling adventurous, the lagoon is your playground. Race across the water on a jet ski with the spray on your face, float high above the ocean while parasailing, or hold on tight as your gang tumbles off a banana boat, laughing all the way. Your holiday manager can book these for you in advance. 8. Overwater Spa Your treatment room is perched above the ocean. As your therapist eases away the stress of the past year, the waves lap gently beneath you, and at some resorts, a glass panel in the floor lets you watch fish drift by. Back in your villa, if there's a jacuzzi on the deck, we'd suggest an evening soak with the sea breeze on your face. It's the perfect way to end the day. 9. Floating Breakfast Start your morning with fresh fruit, fluffy pancakes and eggs just the way you like them, served on a tray that floats across your private pool. With the ocean stretching out in front of you, it's the kind of breakfast you'll want to last until lunch. Voyaah Insider Tip: A floating breakfast needs a pool of your own. If it's on your wish list, ask your holiday manager for a pool villa and to order it for you ahead of time.
The Maldives' best photographs happen where sand meets sea: on a private sandbank, in a glassy lagoon, on your villa deck as the sun goes down, and beneath the surface on a coral reef. Private Sandbanks: A secluded strip of white sand surrounded by endless turquoise water. It's the perfect spot for a proposal, or for photos that look like you own the island. Maldivian Sunsets: Every evening, the sky turns fiery orange and soft blush pink, and you won't need a single filter. Blue Lagoons: The water is so clear and still that it works like a mirror, perfect for reflection shots or for showing off your floating breakfast. Overwater Villas: Every angle looks like a postcard, from pools that seem to melt into the ocean to a breakfast table with endless blue behind it. Underwater: Slip on a mask, and a whole new world opens up. Snorkel over coral gardens and shoals of colourful fish, and watch blacktip reef sharks glide by at a polite distance. Voyaah Insider Tip: Many resorts sell sunrise and sunset versions of the same villa. If golden-hour photos from your own deck matter, ask your holiday manager which way your villa faces before you book.
You won't miss home food here. Many resorts serve Indian dishes alongside cuisines from around the world, and your holiday manager can request vegetarian or Jain meals for you in advance. Pair that with sushi by the sea and fresh coconut water at sunset, and every meal feels like an occasion. Local Delights Indian Food: From fluffy naans to crisp dosas, veg or non-veg, mild or spicy, chances are your resort has it. At times, it feels as if the Maldives loves Indian food as much as we do! Global Cuisine: Sushi by the sea, Italian pasta with ocean views or a perfectly grilled steak in the evening breeze. Every meal takes you somewhere new, without the jet lag. Drinks: Sip a beautifully crafted cocktail by the pool, or fresh coconut water straight from the shell. Whether you're under the stars or knee-deep in the ocean, the choice is yours. Mas Huni: The Maldivian breakfast favourite of tuna, grated coconut, onion, chilli and lime, scooped up with roshi, a round flatbread much like our chapati. Voyaah Insider Tip: Traditional Maldivian curries and many hedhikaa (the local tea-time snacks) are built around fish, so vegetarians should ask before tasting local dishes. If you need Jain meals, let your holiday manager know before you travel, so the kitchen has time to plan. Should You Book a Beach Villa or a Water Villa in the Maldives? It all comes down to your villa vibe. Pick a beach villa if you'd like the sand at your doorstep and room to spread out. Pick a water villa if you've always dreamt of waking up with the ocean right beneath you. 1. Beach Villa This is your perfect beachside sanctuary. Step out, and you're on powder-white sand, with the turquoise ocean just a few steps away. Wake up to a cool ocean breeze, sip your coffee to the sound of the waves and stroll along the beach whenever you like. It's spacious, it's private and it's ideal for nature lovers who want easy beach access. 2. Water Villa The ultimate luxury: your own private paradise, floating above the ocean. Endless turquoise water stretches out beneath your deck, shifting through every shade of blue as the day goes by. Climb down the ladder straight into the lagoon, then soak in views you'll never get tired of. Quiet, serene and oh so dreamy. Which Meal Plan Should You Choose in the Maldives? For most travellers, full board or all-inclusive works out better value than half board. Here's what each plan covers, so you can pick the one that suits your holiday and your appetite. Half board: Breakfast and one other meal, usually dinner. Perfect if you'd like to spend your days on excursions without worrying about lunch. Full board: Breakfast, lunch and dinner, all covered. Ideal if you'd like every meal sorted without thinking twice. Drinks are usually extra. All-inclusive: All your meals plus a selection of drinks, which usually includes house wines, beers and cocktails. Premium labels often cost extra, so it's best to check with your holiday manager. Luxury all-inclusive: The all-in experience. On top of food and drinks, these plans can include spa treatments, water sports and excursions, all handled for you. Pay as you go: Some resorts, especially at the top end, skip full board and all-inclusive altogether. You order what you like, when you like, which suits spontaneous plans. If you'd like to know more about each of these plans, here's our detailed guide to Maldives meal plans. Voyaah Insider Tip: Skip the duty-free liquor on your way out of India. You can't carry alcohol into the Maldives, as customs will take it at the airport, and it isn't served in Malé or on local islands. Your resort will have it, so there's no need to pack a bottle.
A little planning around transfers, seasons and paperwork makes a Maldives holiday from India far smoother. Here are the answers to the questions most Indian travellers ask before they book. 1. How Do You Get to Your Resort in the Maldives? From Malé airport, you reach your resort by speedboat or seaplane, usually in 10 to 60 minutes. Farther atolls need a short domestic flight and a boat ride. Most travellers skip Malé, but nearby Hulhumalé, about 10 minutes from the airport, has a city beach and budget-friendly hotels, perfect for families or a short stop before your resort. Voyaah Insider Tip: Seaplanes fly only in daylight. If your flight lands after sunset and your resort is reachable only by seaplane, plan a night near the airport. 2. What Is the Best Time to Visit the Maldives? The Maldives shines all year round, but November to April brings dry, sunny, picture-perfect days. November to April: Dry season, with calm seas and plenty of sunshine December to March: The clearest water and stunning marine life, ideal for divers May to October: The southwest monsoon brings more showers, and from June, manta rays gather in Baa Atoll 3. How Many Days Do You Need in the Maldives? 4 to 5 days are just right to soak it all in. Stay longer if you'd like to add a few extra days of doing absolutely nothing. 4. Do Indians Need a Visa to Visit the Maldives? No advance visa is needed. Indian passport holders get a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival, with a confirmed return ticket and hotel booking. Fill in the free IMUGA traveller declaration online within 96 hours before you land. 5. Are There Direct Flights from India to the Maldives? Yes. Leading Indian airlines fly nonstop to Malé from several major Indian cities, in roughly 1.5 to 4 hours. From other cities, you can connect through these cities.
